My Back Hurts, Dudes

Not Television
Hahaha, great title. But seriously, my back hurts. I recall first hurting it when we were moving out of Bassett St., and it's sort of hurt on and off ever since. It's been pretty bad for the last couple of days since basketball, so I finally looked up some information on it. I'm pretty sure it's just a muscle strain, and my notoriously bad posture is preventing it from healing properly. The universal recommendation seems to be to rest the back, take some meds to control pain, and use a heating pad. So, I'm thinking I might look into getting a heating pad to use at work (maybe even a massaging one...), and I think I have a masage / heat pad thing at home (although I may have thrown it out when we moved - how ironic!). The point is I'm going to get semi-serious about taking care of this now, as I'm pretty sick of having to bend over like an old man to pick things up that I drop. Note that this does not mean I will stop playing basketball or tennis. I also now miss Basset St. because I mentioned it. Sigh... Mootzger...

Last night Maria was feeling a bit under the weather (a continuation of her under the weather feelings of the weekend), so we spent a quiet evening at home, rather than attending Wine Night. I'm happy to report she's back to her chipper self today, and I got to lay on the floor for quite a while. I'm feeling a sudden vacuum (what an oddly spelled word) of social interaction - nothing for several days! I'm going to miss my Wine Night friends an awful lot by this weekend...

Stepping in to fill the void, however, will be one Mr. Patrick Arthur Hayden. His lease starts tomorrow, so I think he's moving down. I haven't spoken to him for a couple of days, so I'm not sure exactly. Let me just say that I can't fucking wait. I'm excited to see just how little furniture he actually has, and perhaps recreate the days of watching tv on lawn furniture. I also can't wait to introduce him to the whole Chicago crowd, selling him like a used car. I swear, you guys better get along or I don't know what I'll do.

I made quite the giganto pot of coffee this morning, thinking I wanted a little more than usual, but John showed up with store-bought coffee, so I'm stuck with a massive ammount of liquid caffine to drink all by myself. I'm about a third of the way through the pot right now. I'll probably be peeing an awful lot later.

Great! They mixed up the dumb president story (the part where he tried to kiss his wife and you saw how tiny he was compared to her was SO AWKWARD), Jack got some shit done, and the previews certianly seem to suggest an old friend is about to come back... (unbelievable). The only thing that bothered me last night was that everyone was okay with the president condoning terrorist activities, just as long as they didn't target America. I guess there will probably be some fall out about that once the immediate threat is taken care of, though.

Oh man, those Cookies were Great

Not Television
I had a pretty fantastic weekend. Friday night was spent at Mary's party with the usual band of intellectuals, doing things like calling Paul at 2am, eating REALLY good cookies, and planning Basketball Brunch. Maria stayed home due to a little headache, probably somewhat induced by her lack of glasses - but she's going to the eye doctor today, so hopefully her days of eye related headaches are numbered.

Saturday I woke up very early due to feeling a bit off from drinking an awful lot Friday night, and watched Saturday morning cartoons and napped on the couch. It was actually the best Saturday morning I can remember in a long, long time. I awoke from my couch-napping to Maria asking if I wanted waffles, which she made from scratch. They were damn tasty, and hang-over shattering. Then we recieved our new recliner, I finally dragged my ass off the couch, took a shower and we went shopping. I dropped my iPod off for service, and was told it may be out for as long as 25 days. Ba-zing. I also bought X-Men Legends 2, a basketball, tennis balls, and soap. Saturday evening the video game crowd came over, and Maria and Caroline joined in on some SNES-brand Mario Kart action. That plus Halo plus SNL made for a nice relaxing Saturday night. And the new recliner allowed us to seat six people extremely comfortably. Good job, chair.

Sunday was the first Basketball Brunch. In theory, Basketball Brunch will be a weekly affair, occuring at noon on Sundays, rain or shine. We played for a couple of hours (which only translated into one game of hustle and a few round of lightning since we were all awful). It turns out, however, that our friend Ben is something of a basketballing robot, and his skills were reawakening as we finished up hustle. I've never seen anybody cut through three defenders as well as him. And I'm afraid my fall-back advantage of being tall fails in our circle of friends - Ben, Brian and Ellery are all well over six feet tall. Next week I hope to welcome Ted, Paul and Pat to Basketball Brunch, and we can start playing some actual games, perhaps. Afterwards I hit the tennis courts and bought a membership card so that we can start reserving courts. It sounds like there is a potential doubles match a-brewin' once Pat and Ben get new rackets. And finally, Sunday night was spent in my new chair playing Quake and watching bad television with Maria. All in all a truely epic weekend.

Today I'm feeling stiff and sore from moving for the first time in weeks, and it feels great. As I was driving home from Basketball Brunch I was having flashbacks to highschool / college summers, and I couldn't figure out why until I realized it was the smell of dirt and sweat, coupled with feeling tired and driving home in the neon. It reminded me specifically of driving to someone's place after volleyball in Wirth Park. It's so great to feel worn out again. I can't wait until we start playing more often, and get some tennis going, so I get back in shape. Spring's just around the corner, and it sounds like everyone is itching to be a bit more active.

I'm hoping work picks up this week. As a company we have been falling into the trap of getting things 90% done and not finishing the last 10% for weeks. I'd like to see some stuff actually get finished this week, and at least one of our new sites go live. We were hit with a "perfect storm" situation last week where all kinds of billing and contract problems had to be taken care of before actual work could be finished, so I assume we'll get back on schedule now.

I found the picture of the basketball kids at this site - check it out. It's the website of a grade school, which seems to be in Scotland. Their clubs section is really bizzare, and for some reason I can't stop looking at it.

Interesting facts:
*Some kid has been blurred out of several of the club pictures (including the basketball picture above). Is he some sort of criminal mastermind? Or a key witness in a murder trial? Or a vampire? So many possibilities.
*They call basketball "net ball". I suppose that makes sense - as it may have been invented using a basket, but it arrived in Scotland using a net.
*Their "Ethos" page features crude imitations of Calvin and Fred's daughter from The Flintstones (I can't remember her name - Bam Bam's girlfriend).
*Check out the games page - They call Tic Tac Toe "Naughts and Crosses"!
*Their piano club uses not pianos, but pieces of paper with piano keys drawn on them.

Television
SNL
Boring - first skit was somewhat funny, but it was all downhill from there.

Family Guy
Still always funny, but it's starting to feel more like The Simpsons as time goes by - that is, the episodes are becomming more about single-shot gimmicks, rather than just telling a story about the family. I hope they don't fall into the celebrity guest star trap. The story about Stewie the bookie was marvelous, though.

24
Oh man, so good. I just watched last week's episode, and Jack is ten times better this season than he's ever been before. The fight between him and the assasin was great - hand-to-hand fighting worthy of a big-budget movie. And the president's story line is starting to get jazzed up by having his chief of staff outed as a bad guy; I'm hoping that will take some of the focus off of the president's relationship with his wife. The other thing I really like about this season is that everyone feels really competent (except for the president). In past seasons they got outsmarted by the bad guys a lot, and generally screwed stuff up (Kim getting kidnapped four times in a season, for example). This time around they're getting shit done; it feels like they're making progress all the time, but the bad guys manage to stay one step ahead of them. 24's back, baby!

Quick Note

I finally got around to adding the blogs of wine night members I regularly read - check them out. Also, I removed Zombie City.

Blogs Rising from the Grave

Not Television
I love seeing posts on people's blogs for the first time in days starting with, "See, Dave?? My blog's not dead! I write on this all the time!" And I'm not being sarcastic - I do love it, because it means I have blogs to read! I'm enjoying the revival. Pat's list of celebrity crushes made my day - and it's only 10am.

So my life is feeling a bit like last night's episode of My Name is Earl - no, not because my name is Earl, but because, like Earl, I keep trying to accomplish the same task, and keep running into more and more wacky trouble! I've been trying to book a tennis court for Maria and I for about a week now. I called last week and tried to book one one day in advance - they were booked. That was fine, I called back on Friday to book one for Wednesday and they were booked. Okay, I'll just call six days in advance (as far out as they take reservations), so I called on Thursday (yesterday) at 9am to make a reservation for Wednesday - they were booked! Turns out they start taking reservations at 8 am and they fill up almost immediately. SO. I rolled up my sleeves, and called this morning at 7:58 am to get a court for Thursday, and was told that all the 7pm reservations were taken during walk-in (you can reserve in person from 7am-8am before the phones open up), but I can get an 8pm! Great, I say! I'll take it! Oh, what's that? I need some sort of mystery card to make reservations? FUCK! So I have to go down to this place, buy a f'n ten dollar membership card, and THEN I can make reservations. What a ridiculous system! Why can't I just buy this thing the first time I come down to play?! Argh. Tennis is exhausting.

When Harry and Pat were down the revived the memory of "What's your favorite kind of ice cream???" "Pink!!" I was laughing about that all morning, it was great. Also this morning, Maria started school and thus went downtown at the same time as me for the first time in months. It's nice getting to sit with her on the train, as we both read our books - mine about elves, hers about how to write good.

Television
My Name is Earl
Dude, seriously - the fat guy keeps making me laugh. "Can I have another quarter for the claw machine? You said to go for Kermit - he's got skinny arms; he's not a cheap muppet to claw!" I like this show, and it seems to have a million directions to go in, as each week is just another one of Earl's things he's done wrong. Good lord, though - what will they do if they ever run out of things on his list? BUM BUM BUM... This was the first show from last night that can be described as 'sweet'.

The Office
This was the second 'sweet' show from last night - what a great ending!! Oh man. That ending took the whole episode and twisted it from "dull" to "brilliant". I loved it. And it retrospectively made me love the whole highschool love affair Jim was caught in the midst of, the office wars, Packard asking for "Michael Scott they gay nerd", and everything else. Bravo, Office.

Four Kings
I CAN'T STOP. This show continues to be as mediocre as shit, but it's so easy to watch. Honestly, looking back I can think of maybe one thing that was somewhat entertaining. One thing. (It had a really long setup, so I can't explain it here.) I'm not sure why I keep holding out hope for this show - perhaps its the fact that years ago I sort of liked Seth Green, and somewhere in the depths of my brain I think he can still be funny.

Leno's Monolouge
I ended up on the couch as this came on, and actually watched his monolouge. First of all, this was the first talk show I've watched live* in HD, and it looks really good! (*By live, I just mean as it was broadcast, not off the DVR.) But Leno's shit was pretty far from funny. He is charming, though, I gotta give him that. His band leader guy is a doof.

Archie and the Gang's Mysteries
I'm not sure what this is actually called, I doubt it's what I wrote up there, but it's on at 7:30 am on channel 8 here (8 being the channel Cheers is on before I go to sleep). Archie (of the comics) and his buddies fight various mummies and ghosts and whatnot, and still find time to help their friends. It's really weird.

Let's Give 'em Something to Blog About

Not Television
As I went through the turn-stiles (styles?) this morning I thought it'd be great to make a short film called "Rat Race" in which a guy is hurrying through his morning commute. The highlite of the film would be when he comes to the turn-stiles. He takes a few quick shuffle steps, and looks at the different turn-stiles, picks one and charges through, only to be met by an American Gladiator with their big padded shield thing. There could be an announcer, "Looks like he's going to the left and- OH! He runs right into Nitro! That's going to cost him valuable seconds! Nitro's not letting him up without a fight!" I dunno, I thought that would be pretty great.

In another brilliant Dave move I accidently left my TV on all day yesterday showing the desktop of my computer. I managed to do the "impossible", and somewhat burned the image into my DLP TV, though you could only see it as the tv warmed up. I was so mad at myself, but as of this morning it appears the image may have dissapeared (knock on wood). Perhaps it just need to be used normally for a while. You could never see the image as the tv was on - not even on a blank screen - just as it was starting up, so it's really no biggie anyways. It's just that knowledge that you screwed up your great toy, even if in a tiny way.

My buddy Phil from Atlas is in some big poker tournament, and it looks like he's doing pretty well. You can check his progress here (he's Phil Galfond). If he wins first place he gets $755,525. If he just gets in the top 18 he wins $22,895 (looks like there was a $10,000 buy-in). Right now he's in fifteenth place, which wins $27,475. Damn, he's set to make a shitload of money! Every time I hear about his poker exploits it makes me want to start playing online after work. But I also enjoy sitting on my lazy ass doing nothing. So there ya go.

Today feels like a Friday, but it's a Thursday. We're going to a bar tonight (the wine night crowd), and Mary is having a party Friday night, and Saturday it sounds like people are comming up to our apartment to hit the Hop Leaf. Crazy! I like it when you have a few days of plans worked out in advance. I've been trying to reserve a tennis court for Maria and I for the last few days and everything is booked all the time. They take reservations six days in advance, so I called this morning at nine to get a court next Wednesday, and all they had left was 4 or 5 pm. Bastards. Reportedly they start taking reservations at 8, which is right about when I head out for work, so I'll call tomorrow morning to get a court next Thursday before I leave for work. Here's hoping!

So it's Feburary in a week, Maria starts school tomorrow and Pat moves down sometime in the next week or so. Wine night resumes on Monday and I just got the confirmation call that our new recliner shows up Saturday between 11 and 3. The next few weeks are packed! It's going to be my birthday before I know it, and I'll be showered in birthday-valentine's day combo cards - awesome!

Television
Lost
Not great, I was hoping for more on the Others plot line, but Charlie's shit was intriguing at least. It must be really hard to try to juggle several plot lines at once, but I guess I would have liked to see some mention of Michael out in the jungle and the Others and all that... However, Hurley getting a girl is AWESOME. I love Hurley. Have I said that before? Because jeez louise, he's the best character in the history of television. Hurley - the human smile.

Love Monkey
Yeah, so the love interest from Ed's office isn't the greatest actress in the world, and the kids who play the singers somewhat stink, but hey - the parts that center around the four buddies are fun. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they'll find their groove soon - I see potential but lack of polish right now.

Scrubs
This actually wasn't as good as the other episodes this season, though the ostrich in Turk's cap was a nice touch. A little to much like Dude, Where's My Car to really delight me, but still fun. By the by, how did they manage to make the floating head blue screen thing funny? I've never seen that actually work before. Good job, folks.

American Idol
Yup, waining. The judges really are just bastards and their schtick has offically been spread too thin. This one's in real danger of losing one viewer. But I share my TV with Maria, who will continue to watch! And we don't even have a Nielson box to begin with! BLAST!

I am really, amazingly Dumb

Not Television
Last night Maria and I went out to get some groceries and take my iPod to Best Buy for service. I got my iPod, searched for the PSP, and got that, looked up where the Best Buy is to remind myself, threw on my coat and walked out the door... without my iPod. And didn't realize until we were halfway there. Unbelievable. I'm dumb.

I just read this whole thing about HDCP (high-def content protection), and how Blu-Ray and HD DVD will require HDCP-complient inputs to provide HD content, and how many satellite and cable providers will require it as well very soon. I had never heard of HDCP before, and I never looked for it when buying a tv! I finally found a site that tells me all HDMI inputs are HDCP-complient, so I think I'm in the clear, but damn that freaked me out for a minute. When I do get my HD DVD / Blu-Ray player, though, I'll probably need an HDMI switch... yeesh, that could be expensive, considering the cords are like $100.

This morning I watched a bunch of the old movies we made before heading to work. What a fucking great idea.

Soda Can Robot - I'm still pretty proud of this one. Watching any of these movies that were shot inside 208 Basset made me very nostalgic - I saw a shot of the den and feelings of home suddenly flooded my brain. I fucking loved that house. SCR didn't make me laugh, but it was nice to watch Thomas reading off of a script really obviously and Mantsch trying his best to seem natural.

Drum Machine - I had forgotten how neat this is. I know I'm tooting my own horn pretty hard right now, but I really liked watching this one. I'm glad a copy of this managed to slip through the fingers of hard drive crashes - too bad it's in crappy Quicktime format.

Caps Making Popcorn - Hahaha, Nima. I love Nima - it's too bad I haven't seen him for so long. I'm pretty sure Caps and Dan deserve oscars for this. The last shot with Caps and the fake ketchup blood is a real tear-jerker.

Screaming with Foosball Interlude - I LOVE the back-to-back screaming parts. Eating a donut? Who woulda thought??

Great Ending to a Movie that Went Nowhere but had a great Ending - Alright, this floored me. Hilgeman just standing there waving after we all make complete asses of ourselves (plastic gun double homicide-suicide style). I laughted until I cried over Hilgeman's face. I certianly hope to see him again someday...

Glen Guitar Solo thing sent in to Adult Swim - HAHAHA, GLEN! Oh my god - never be sober again. I don't understand how this didn't win their Harvey Birdman commercial contest. The pilgrim hat solo closer is still the funniest thing I've ever seen involving pilgrims.

I just realized I didn't watch the Penguin Movie. I hope I have a copy of that - otherwise I'll have to get it from somebody. I seem to remember my copy getting screwed up, and stuck streched out in wide screen somehow.

Television
24
I didn't see this week's episode yet, but last night I did finally finish the four-hour premier. Jack's plot continues to be stellar, but the president / first-lady combo is AWFUL. Where did they find these actors?? Good golly - going from David Palmer to this whiny, effeminate, nervous little man is unacceptable. Please recast this role mid-season so I can stop wanting to fast forward through anything he is in. Seeing Samwise Gamgee play some sort of counter terrorism expert is pretty cool - I like his character. All in all everything except the president is great!

Scrubs
We only watched one episode - meaning there's a whole 'nother one waiting for us tonight! I love this show. Love, love, love. "Where's my son?" "Oh, he's out on the ledge playing with the birds." "What??" "Haha, I'm just kidding - he's green!"

American Idol
Another audition episode. Two hours is too long. By far the best singer of the season thus far tried out last night - I don't understand how she can lose (unless they find other amazing people). I offically predict that the giant gay guy with the biggest chin you've ever seen and an underbite will win the whole thing somehow, though. I now understand how people can get sucked in, hoping their favorites will win. But I still question the later episodes' ability to captivate me.

An awful lot was left unwatched last night in order to catch up on 24, so there's quite a queue building - by tonight I'll have at least another 24, Love Monkey, Scrubs, Lost, and The West Wing to watch. And I'm probably forgetting stuff. Sounds like it's shapping up to be a perfect Saturday afternoon sitting in my new recliner watching hour after hour of television.

Spending Money you don't have: Always Fun

Not Television
This was a full weekend - full of Pat and Harry, apartment hunting, Mario Strikers, pizza*, parents*, football and dogs.

*Two-thirds of the classic Sra. Jessen party combo.

++=

Friday night Harry and Pat came down and I came to realize how much I have let my gaurd down - I am never randomly physically attacked anymore. Nor do I randomly physically attack anyone else. But after just a couple of days with Pat I'm right back to constantly fearing for the safety of my back. It's good to be on my toes. We went apartment hunting with our new best friend, Jen, on Saturday. She was impressed by Harry's television resume, and Pat's need of an apartment. It was sad to see her go, though; as Harry observed "This is the last time we'll ever go apartment hunting together - the four of us, I mean." I almost cried. But Pat did manage to find a very nice apartment very close to where I live, so I'm damn happy.

Pat's new place is somewhat smaller than where Maria and I live, and doesn't have super high ceilings, but it is very nice, and runs $450 / month less than where we currently live. This makes me very interested in looking for potential new apartments in a couple of months. If you put $225 / month in my pocket, I'd be pretty open to moving to a somewhat less fancy pad.

So now I just have to wait about a week and Pat Hayden will be living just down the street from me (and over a couple of blocks). It's going to be amazing and bizzare to suddenly have a Hayden presence back in my day-to-day - I can't wait. First order of business: buy Guitar Hero.

After Harry and Pat took off, Maria and I drove up to Elm Grove to visit my parents for the afternoon, and bought a recliner on the way up (to be delivered on Saturday). The chair was pretty cheap, but still more than I should have spent. It's worth it, though - it's going to be very nice to have an extra comfortable seat, and also a place to rock / recline. I love a good recliner. With the arrival of said chair on Saturday, and a "ladies night" that day, I figure Saturday will be a perfect time to have some guys over to play video games and drink beer. Just like a sitcom!

At my parent's we watched football, had even more pizza, and played with the dogs (which have become MUCH smaller and cuter since we normalized Ernie's size). I also took a short nap on the floor. Good times.

Television
I didn't watch much this weekend, save The West Wing last night. I was thinking I might stop watching this show, and I just read that it's getting cancelled after this season. So I might finish the show out just to see how it ends, or I might just throw in the towel now. The first few seasons were so much better than it is now. Harry and I took in a few side-splitting minutes of Martin on Saturday, and we all enjoyed an episode of Holmes on Homes Sunday morning, but that was about it.

At Pat's suggestion we rented The Baxter, which I really enjoyed. It was so easy to watch, and full of Stella-brand weirdness. I was wondering for a while if they were going to do something unexpected with the plot, but it's just as predictable as any other romantic comedy - except much more entertaining. The impressions game they played in the bar was fantastic, and I wish I had been in Pat's car as he and Harry drove home, playing that the whole way.

Hey Dan - Remember Girls Club!?

I Miss Dan
I just read a little blurb about how Emily's Reason Why Not was cancelled after one show, and it mentioned Girls Club! Remember Girls Club?? It was that show about three hott female lawyers that ONLY Dan and I watched? No one else in America saw both episodes - but Dan and I sure did!! We called the hot one, "The Hot One." What was it on after? 24? Boston Public? Probably Boston Public. DAMN, remember Boston Public?? That show was awesome. And the super crazy hot teacher that got even way more superer crazier hotter in her last episode (NO, NOT JERRI RYAN, YOU IDOT)? And the teacher who dated a woman with a hook for a hand, then that super hott teacher, and so by simple logic would be dating Jesus within a month? Oh man, I'm missing watching TV with Dan. We used to be the kings of television. We watched the first four seasons of The Sopranos in like two months. And made pizzas on his Pizzaz from my minifridge while we did it. Remember when we bought pizzas, then went back in for the pizza cutter? Good times.

HELL YEAH!!
Left Top: The Hott One -- Right: Hott Teacher before getting superer hotter

Not Television
Pat and Harry visit tonight, which is fucking awesome. I'm really excited to hang out and put in some serious doing nothing time. I'm also anxious to see where Pat ends up living. So help me, if he picks an apartment I can't walk to that's off the brown line or some shit, I'm going to crack some heads. I plan on taking the fellas to Paulina's for breakfast tomorrow, and finally breaking out the Mario Strikers (though I'm told they've been practicing, and I've yet to play - so perhaps I'll get it out before they arrive for a cram session).

Sunday is looking like a visit to Elm Grove, and possibly buying a recliner on the way up (I'm still debating if I want to pay retail for one). Then it's only a week or so until Pat moves down! (crazy) Plus Maria goes back to school in less than a week, and wine nights will be resuming a week from Monday. It's starting to feel like everything is finally getting back up to full speed after the holdays.

Television
Four Kings
Why can't I stop watching this show?! Every time I see it I get entranced, then the next day I'm embarassed for having watched it. If I'm not careful I'm going to start saying it's good (WHICH IT IS NOT).

My Name is Earl
A bizzare plot line about a heist that seemed pretty out of the usual for this show. I guess they were just trying something different, but it was somewhat dumb. I really like the big guy - he's a very quality idiot. "I found these pencils that look like pens! See! It looks like a pen!.. But it's a pencil!" He's my imaginary friend, I think.

The Office
AMEN for getting the Jim & Pam plot forced out into the open! Let's do this thing! Holy crap, if they ever got together I think I'd cry a little bit. I loved when Michael stuck his hair down to look like Jim's. They've managed to turn this show into one I'm looking forward to every week for plot development, rather than just a comedy (yet it's still really funnny). Definately first-tier.

The O.C.
I discovered the perfect way to watch The O.C. last night - while doing something else. I think I was looking at cars online while I watched this late last night, and it seemed much better than usual. Marissa's sister is amazingly likable, and not the grating horrible crap hole I thought she would be. Nothing really happened except some silly side-story junk just to get the new sister into the action. I probably would have hated this episode if I had been paying attention - I don't think I'll ever fully focus on this show again.

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Not Television
Today is my Mom's birthday! She doesn't read this, so we'll move on.

I have finally recieved confirmation from Pat that he's comming down tonight or tomorrow, hopefully with Harry. I'm really looking forward to it. Apartment hunting, Mario Strikers and eating will commence. I'm also hoping to sucker those chumps into maybe helping me move a as-of-yet-non-existant recliner. What a bunch of sucker chumps. There are also rumors of Helen being in town this weekend, though those are as of yet unsubstantiated. Sunday may be spent in Elm Grove watching football with my parents. So basically this weekend is looking pretty good.

My iPod is totally screwed up. I think I might take it to Best Buy tonight to get it serviced, as it's basically non-functioning right now. Maybe I'll get really lucky and they'll just replace it with a video...

I spoke to Kris via IM yesterday for a while about the Volkswagen I want to buy, and he had lots of good insight, being a VW freak and all. He even called what is apparently the biggest VW dealer in the country (located near the twin cities) posing as me, and offered to check out cars up there. I'm greatful for the help, but mostly I'm totally excited about this image of Kris in a trench coat with dark glasses and a fake moustache pretending to be me looking at cars. I know if you don't know Kris you probalby read that and thought "what a dumb idea - there's no reason he'd go in disguise", but you don't know Kris. If anyone would actually do this, it's the Kris-Joe twin city combo. Pink pants, anyone?

Television
Lost
Awesome. I loved the ending, and I'm very hopeful for the future of the island dwellers. They're really comming back from the holiday break with some strong plot movement; I've heard from some people that they're dragging the plot out, but I think that's crazy. The two episodes back thus far have dwelt directly with the core plot lines of the Others and the monster. I like the direction that the show seems to be taking, though it is definately dangerous, as they're changing things up dramatically. (Note that I'm speaking in horribly annoying non-specifics, as I don't want to ruin anything for folks that haven't seen the episode yet.)

24
I watched the first half of the premier last night, and I must say ho-lee-god. I really liked the opening, and I also really liked Joe's description of it before I saw it; "In the first 15-minutes there are major changes with some of the characters that have been on since Season 1." Yeah, I'd say killing, almost killing, or trying to kill most of the core cast is a major change! Pfeiffer rules.

This season seems to be starting off on a great foot. Rather than convoluted conspiracies surrounding people we have just been introduced to, we're getting that same type of intrigue with characters we've known for years - which is great. Thus far I really like the plot with Jack, but I find the new president really unlikable, and I kind of hate the 'first lady is crazy' plot line. I hope that shit gets squashed soon, or that they stick with Jack most of the time. (This is also the most badass he's ever seemed, which is cool.)

John Mayer Jr. Says Love is a Marathon

Not Television
We have a new programmer upstairs who is really, REALLY into video games. He got word that I like games too, and he's started emailing me a lot about what games he likes, and saying we should play sometime. He's a really nice guy, so it's pretty cool. He's even offered to bring in an extra copy of Unreal Tournament 2K4 for me to try out at home. I'm afraid if we ever played anything he'd learn how much more he plays than I do, and I would be the worst kind of shamed - video shamed.

My desire to get a recliner continues to burn. I spent a chunk of time last night moving furniture around, seeing how we could fit it in. Eventually it seemed we should just leave everything as it is, and stick the chair against a wall. The den really is about one seat short of barely enough seating - it's hard going from three couches to one couch. I don't want to spend much money, though; I'm going to try to get to the Brown Elephant thrift store on Clark before it closes sometime this week to see if they have any cheap options.

Last night Maria and I watched a huge ammount of television, and she made ANOTHER CHICKEN POT PIE. It was a great night. It looks like the schedule is pretty cleared up - tonight we just have Lost to watch, so I should be able to get through the first half of the 24 premier.

Television
Love Monkey
I liked it. It was pretty standard 30-somethings in NYC looking for happiness antics (best friend who is a girl, anyone?), but with some good twists. I like the group of dudes, they go together easily in my brain, and made me laugh a couple of times. I also liked that not everything in the episode mattered; Ed (or whatever his name is in this show) spent the middle chunk talking about starting a record label, but ended up landing a new job instead. Kind of like a real life maybe a little bit. It was just dumb fun, but it earned another watching from me next week.

Gilmore Girls
I'm liking Luke's daughter more now, she seems like a decent addition. The delay of the wedding date doesn't seem like that big of a deal to me (perhaps I'm thinking too much like a robot). They seem to need another big arc to start. I don't want it to be something overly dramatic, though, like when Loreli started the Inn - just something to glue the show together and keep things moving. Luke needs to build a new diner, or Kirk needs to start a rival town over the hill, or Luke's daughter and Rory need to go into business or something.

American Idol
Maria loves this show, and I must admit that the audition episode last night was strangely entertaining. I've never watched more than a few minutes before, but it had it's moments. My favorite part was the first guys that made it - some rather portly twins that were pretty fun to watch run around. And they could sing really well. It did get old after a while, though, and I do not believe that watching a dozen people sing one after the other will ever be fun for me. Time shall tell, perhaps.

Scrubs
This is great - you should be watching it. Two episodes a week is just right, and the goofiness shows no signs of deteriorating. Not much to say, it's just good.

A Long, Guilt-Ridden, Bitter-Sweet Sigh of Relief

Ernie
Ernie is now back in Princeton, awaiting a more suitable home for his great big face. I had my first guilt dream last night about him, and I'm sure it won't be my last. I don't really feel guilty about bringing him back - I feel like it had to be done - but I do feel guilty about the unmistakable sense of relief I felt upon his departure. Ernie is a great guy to visit, but he's not the type of dog you can keep in an apartment. In the last few days he had gone from being a big sweetheart to being a real handful (hand full?) especially in the last two days, when we had to keep him fenced up. He went to the bathroom exclusively on our hallway floor - refused to do so outside, shed like crazy, started barking a lot (both at guests and just randomly), didn't sleep through the night, would wake us up over and over during the night, stunk like hell, and would never listen to Maria. I feel like all of these issues were part of that usual period as the dog gets used to his surroundings, and I feel somewhat cheated that we didn't get to try to work past them, but now that all of those stresses are suddenly gone, I must admit I feel pretty relieved.

The first thing we did when we came home last night was clean the house and everything in it. We washed every article of clothing worn in the last couple of weeks, swept, mopped, and lint-rolled every surface above floor level. I have never appreciated a clean floor and a spotless couch (with no blankets covering it!) as much as I do right now. And when I plopped down on my bed last night with Maria, the house clean and quiet, the fact that I smiled makes me feel a bit guilty. I just need to remember why we had to get rid of Ernie, that he'll find a much more suitable home outside of the city where he won't be a threat to anyone, and that we didn't kick him out for being smelly.

So are you getting a new dog?
This seems to be the immediate question that everyone asks upon hearing of this (which is pretty reasonable). The answer as of today is not for a while at least. Maria and I both feel like we need to recoup a bit after all of the emotional and evironmental stress we've been through over Ernie, but eventually we may start looking again. We will definately learn from the mistakes we made with Ernie, however. When we picked him, we went against everything we had said we wanted in a dog - we were just so excited to get one that we took the first one we saw (and it's pretty impossible not to fall in love with Ernie when you first meet him). We wanted a small dog, Ernie was big. We wanted a non-shedding dog, Ernie was a hair machine. We wanted a lap dog, Ernie was more of a hunter. We wanted a calm dog, Ernie was hyper. It wasn't a good fit, we need a little guy that we can scoop up, and can lay on the couch with us. Have you met my parent's dogs? Bingo.

Not Television
And this marks my return to some sense of blog-normalcy. The dude that Ernie bit is still out there, and hasn't called me yet, but as each days passes the less I worry about it. And until then, I will strive to reshape my life into what was normal a month ago.

Car Shopping
On Saturday I went and test drove that beautiful W8 Passat I posted here earlier. It was an amazing car, a real stunner, and built like a tank. I could definately see buying it in a few months, but I decided I wasn't ready to make such a long term monitary commitment at this time. The sales guys were incredibly assertive when trying to stop me from leaving, constantly begging me to stay as they reworked the deal, then comming back having knocked five bucks off. Finally I basically said I'd think about it and the manager actually called me a liar - saying I had promised to buy a car that day (which I most certianly had not; I actually made it very clear through the entire process that I was almost definately NOT buying a car that day). That was pretty damn off-putting. I told him that after that, the only way they'd get me to buy a car that day would be to sell it to me incredibly cheap - like $250 a month. And the slimy sales manager actually ran to the front of the store in front of me (I had to go up there to get my Neon key, which they had appraised earlier), and asked the owner if he could make that offer, after telling me there was no way they could possibly come down as low as $300 just minutes earlier.

(The best part of all that was that earlier they had told me in order to qualify for the college grad financing program I'd need to put down 10% of the car's value, and that my trade-in counted towards that. Then they came back ten minutes later and told me it was actually 15%, and that the trade-in did not count. I told the sales guy straight up that I was suspicious of that sudden change in numbers, and asked if he had any documentation about the program I could look at. He skittered around, saying they didn't have anything, but I could talk to his manager. I said yes, I would like to, and he ran off, comming back ten minutes later with no manager, but a new set of numbers. Fucking scam artists.)

Since then, they have emailed me twice, and called me FOUR TIMES last night to check up, see how my experience was, etc, etc, etc. I finally told the last guy off, saying "You've called me four times and emailed me twice - I will think about it, please leave me alone," and he acted all suprised, like he had no idea they had been contacting me. Car sales men really are incredible. What I've taken away from this is that if you are EVER going to buy a car, negotiate until you can't stand it any more, then get up to leave, and I gaurntee they will scramble all over the place to knock more money off the car, desperately trying to keep you there. It works like a charm. I really might go back there in a few months to buy a car, just because I'll have such an upper hand after they've fallen all over themselves to kiss my ass.

Television
Because of being out of town and then cleaning all day yesterday, I am WAY behind on my television. I now have four hours (groan) on 24 to watch (I see that four hour premier as a hurdle to over come, rather than a great start to a season), West Wing, and several second-tier shows to watch. Gilmore Girls tonight and Lost tomorrow eat up time as well (not including all of the half-hour shows I always over look). I'm going to need to really dedicate myself to get all of this watched before next week. But I am confident that through intensive training and hard work I will be able to get it all done.

We Will Miss You, Ernie

The Very Sad News
Sunday morning I was walking Ernie, and he was being his usual overly-aggressive self upon seeing another dog being walked. This time, however, he took it several dozen steps farther and jumped up and bit the man walking said dog on the arm, ripping his coat and giving the guy a decent little bite mark on his arm (nothing too serious - no stiches needed, I'm sure, but distressing enough). This was jaw-droppingly shocking to me. I bumbled and stumbled over apology after apology. The poor guy seemed in shock, and was pretty quiet. He got my name and phone number, and I told him to call me if I can help with any repair or doctor bills - though from what I saw it appears he just needed to go home and wash his arm and get his coat taylored. In my efforts to hold Ernie down and apologize for the tenth time, I failed to get even his name, so I'm left to wait and wonder what he'll decide to do about the incident.

Ernie has been becomming more aggressive lately, though this was way outside of his usual character. However, I don't feel like I can reasponsibly walk him in the neighborhood anymore. The nightmare scenario for me is someone walking their dog with their kid around and Ernie getting aggressive. I simply can't even let that be a possibility. Thus, with heavy hearts, Maria and I are driving Ernie back to the shelter we got him from this afternoon. Hopefully they can help him find a home that is not in the city, a house with a big yard somewhere where he can run and play without endangering anyone. If we had that big yard I would absolutely love to keep and hug Ernie until the end of time, but we don't have a long-term solution for him.

I'm going to miss Ernie a lot. I get jealous when I think of that family that's going to get him and keep him forever. It sort of breaks my heart that it didn't work out, but this is for the best. Ernie, all who have met you will miss you, and all who haven't missed out.

My Brain just Exploded

Researchers Develop Quantum Processor
Jay Wrolstad, newsfactor.com Fri Jan 13, 11:17 AM ET

A computer chip based on the esoteric science of quantum mechanics has been created by researchers at the University of Michigan. The chip might well pave the way for a new generation of supercomputers.

Employing the same semiconductor-fabrication techniques used to create common computer chips, the Michigan team was able to trap a single atom within an integrated chip and control it using electrical signals.

Two Places at Once

As of yet, the technology is not applicable to typical desktop PCs or servers, but quantum computers are said to be promising because they can solve complicated problems using massively parallel computing.

That is accomplished by the quirky nature of quantum mechanics, said Christopher Monroe, a physics professor and the principal investigator and co-author of the paper "Ion Trap in a Semiconductor Chip." He explained that that chips can process multiple inputs at the same time in the same device.

"With quantum mechanics, an object can be in two places at the same time, as long as you don't look at it," he said. The quantum computer architecture can store quantum bits (qubits) of information, where each qubit can hold the numbers one or zero, or even both digits simultaneously.

When a qubit is added to a quantum system, the computing power doubles. Thus, the quantum machine can crunch numbers at a rate that is exponentially faster than conventional processors, said Monroe.

New Spin on Semiconductors

Electrically charged atoms (ions) for such quantum computers are stored in traps in order to isolate the qubits, a process that is essential for the system to work.

The challenge is that current ion traps can hold only a few atoms, or qubits, and are not easily scaled, making it difficult to create a quantum chip that can store thousands or more atomic ions. A string of such atoms, in theory, could store thousands of bits of information.

In the chip created at Michigan, which is the size of a postage stamp, the ion is confined in a trap while electric fields are applied. Laser light puts a spin on the ion's free electron, enabling it to flip it between the one or zero quantum states.

The spin of the electron dictates the value of the qubit. For example, an up-spin can represent a one, or a down-spin can represent a zero -- or the qubit can occupy both states simultaneously.

Applications for Cryptography

The quantum processor is made of gallium arsenide in a layered structure and etched with electrodes using the same type of lithography process as those used to create today's computer chips. Each electrode is connected to a separate voltage supply, and these various electrical voltages control the ion by moving as it hovers in a space carved out of the chip.

The next step is to build a bigger chip with many more electrodes, so that it can store more ions. There still is a lot of work to be done to learn how to control lots of ions in one of these chips. It won't be nearly as easy as it was with conventional computer chips, but at least we know what to do in principle, Monroe said.

"This type of integrated chip structure is significant because it demonstrates a way to scale the quantum computer to bigger systems," Monroe said. "It has applications for processing very large [data sets] such as in cryptography, for example, and there is a lot of interest in this by the government."

Friday the Thirteenth

Ernie returned to perfection last night. He was so PERfect, that if I were Dumbledore I would make him a PREfect!

...takes self-satisfied sip from my steaming mug of cocoa,
pushes up sleeves on my bath robe,
resumes typing...

Without the smelltastic quilt to tempt him, the big E showed no sign of having an accident, and was generally right back on his game. He's still not sleeping at night, and was poking around me a lot before he finally agreed to go lay down, but I hope he sort of gets on our schedule soon. I suppose I could try to wear him out before bedtime.

I like this car a lot. I think perhaps someday I will buy one. Just the thought excites me - every once in a while I find a car like this one that is the top of the line car from a few years ago that's been driven a lot, but taken excellent care of by a car enthusiast. That's exactly the kind of car I want to get my dirty little mitts on. Oh, W8 Passat GLX, I yearn for thee.

Not much to blog at all, I just wanted to poke my head in. It's the weekend in a few hours, so be happy.

Millennium Park

First of all, I just bit my tounge harder than I ever have, and nearly cried. Oh my god. It still hurts, it's unreal.

Before biting my tounge, I went otuside for lunch, only to discover that it's like fifty degrees outside, and beautiful. Not a cloud in the sky, nice breeze, truely an occasion to finally go wander around in Milennium Park a little bit. It was very refreshing to feel the sun on my face and be warm for a bit. I saw a guy in shorts! Pictures follow of my first ever visit to the park - it looks much cooler from ground level. It's impressive, everwhere you look it's beautiful. They do an amazing job of hiding streets, and making every view look perfect.

Let's start with the obligatory photos of the bean.

They're cleaning the under side of it right now; it's all sealed off.

And I just like this one.

The outdoor theater thing.

There is a sort of framework over the interior.

It looks great from any angle.

There's a really cool garden with a little river, and they have the trees fenced in such that in ten years the trees will be a fence. (Supposedly with smooth edges!)

This is my building from the park (it's the tallest one).

I've always liked this building - we can see it out some of our windows.

And finally the ice skating rink. FROM THE GROUND.

Mr. Coffee

Not Television
John and I finally bought a coffee maker for our office (that exact one there), and I made two pots this morning. The first was undrinkable - basically brown water. The second is better, but still pretty weak. I'm leaning, though. It's nice to have cheap coffee, but I've added up the expense of the maker, coffee, sugar, all that jazz, and I'll need to drink this coffee for 17 days, or three and a half work weeks, before it all pays for itself (compared to getting coffee at Caribou every morning). That also assumes that these beans last. But still, I'd rather be able to make coffee here - I enjoy anything that's a process.

Ernie had another accident last night, but I am now certain that it's due to that quilt. It smells like something (probably Ernie pee) that he rolls around in and identifies as a place to relieve himself. So he just doesn't get that quilt anymore. Unfortunately the quilt was the most padded thing he had to lay on, now he just has a thin blanket and a towel for during the day. I'm keeping him penned in the front hall for the next two days just to be certian, but I'm confident that's the end of that. He also seems to want his night time walk to be right before bed, so I'm going to push it back from 9ish to 10ish, so he'll have just gone out before bed time.

Last night I kept him closed into the bedroom, and he was up most of the night, oinking around and licking the floor (a favorite pastime of his). I'm pretty sure that the noise and motion resulted in Maria and I both feeling tired this morning (no deep sleep), so I'm not going to repeat that again. As long as he doesn't have an unprovoked accident tonight, we'll go back to letting him roam the house. It's too bad he can't sleep through the night, but he seems to prefer short naps here and there, rather than a long sleep. I expect by Monday he'll be back to free reign of the kitchen at all times.

Television
There is so very much good television around these days. We added three new shows to the DVR last night - 24, American Idol (for Mz. Parrott), and Love Monkey. Hopefully all will be fantastic.

Lost
Last night was the return, and it was a pretty good warm-up. Eco's back story was cool to see, and another extemely strange connection to the island was made. What was up with the black smoke monster showing him images? I think it was showing him his past, but it also sort of looked like the film strip, or who knows what? I like Eco, I think he's a really good addition; sort of like Locke, but with a very different flavor. Walt in the computer? Charlie's heroin stash? Shit's going down. It's great to get back into the story, they sort of took a break from forwarding the mythology before the holiday lapse. Also, Hurley continues to be the best character on any show currently on television. (Maybe.)

Holmes on Homes
I think this airs on Discovery Home, and I've watched two or three episodes now. It's pretty cool, sort of like This Old House. Holmes is a contractor in Canada who takes jobs that other contractors have tried to fix and failed. He points out everything the previous guys did wrong, and does everything exactly right, it's pretty cool. Last night he put a new roof and a new deck on this old mansion, and fixed some water damage inside. I especially liked watching them build the deck - it'd be awesome to be able to build like that. This made me realize I should be watching Myth Busters. For some reason it's not being recorded - I'll add it tonight.

Two Television Comedys I really Love, but not enough People have Seen
I never watched these when they were on the air, but through the magic of DVD we can all bask in what could have been.

Freaks and Geeks
This show was fantastic. I love the cast, you can watch the episodes over and over, and the plot line is simple but elegant. The characters are funny and loveable, and I find I identify with them. The show centers around a group of freshman nerds (or "geeks") and their adventures in highschool. They struggle to find love, make new friends, and defend themselves against bullys.

The main core of geeks is three best friends, who make refrence to themselves as a tripod a couple times - together they can get through anything, but apart they fall. I'm horrible with names, but you have the everyman, unsure of himself and always striving to be accepted, the overpoweringly nerdy nerd, who seems to accept his geekdom, but still jumps at the chance to be more popular, and the third is a scheming, shrewd buisnessman - always talking his friends into his plans and getting them in trouble.

The show also follows a group of freaks - a band of slackers, some more outcast than others from the popular crowd at school. They dabble in drugs and hang out, wanting nothing more than to stay out late, get in trouble, and accomplish as little as possible. The everyman geek's sister falls in with this crowd, drawn by a crush on their hunky leader. They seem like a group of bullies at first, but as the plot progesses we learn they're actually decent guys.

This is available on DVD, and if you ever want a fantastic, lazy weekend, pick this up.

Undeclared
The spiritual successor to Freaks and Geeks, this show contains many of the same cast members and writers. Here we follow a band of four dudes and three girls who have just arrived at college, and basically live out all the wacky shit we all wish had actually happened when we were 18. The characters are realistic-ish college guys, but they are frequently thrust into bizzare situations. The plot seems to be scattered, not necessarily maintaining continuity from episode to episode. This makes watching episodes back to back on DVD a bit odd sometimes, but they are great on their own, so it works out.

Only 18 episodes or so were made of Undeclared, but it makes for a great nightly thing to watch for a couple of weeks. This show has a much goofier feel than Freaks and Geeks, and is much less serious. Where F&G deals with more depressing issues sometimes, Undeclared is more interested in seeing what happens when you get in a prank war with your RA, or your Dad watches porn with your roomates. It's pure delight.

Ernie, Ernie, Ernie

Not Television
Ernie ruined his perfect house breaking record last night by managing to have two accident within two hours of being walked - a walk on which he did, in fact, go to the bathroom. All house breaking and annoyance issues aside, it's pretty impressive that he can generate poop that fast. Both accidents did occur during out-of-routine moments for him, but he should still know better. Odder still was the fact that both accidents happened right by where he usually hangs out (the front hall) - all dogs I've ever seen leave messes away from their typical quarters if they just can't hold it. I'm somewhat concerned that the first one was just a lapse of control, but the second one was partially due to the fact that he's identified the area as a bathroom. To try to stem this possible attitude, I've blocked his access to the kitchen today so he has to hang out in that front hall. I put his food in there, and assembled a temporary stand-in bed while his usual quilt is washed (sucks for him - from a comfy quilt to a couple of thin blankets). I don't expect that we're seeing the beginning of a complete loss of house training, but I want to make sure any problems are nipped in the bud. Hopefully if we keep him in the front hall for the next few afternoons it will help correct any new confusion. Perhaps he was just mourning the loss of his favorite toy: Blue Hippopotamus. Ernie labotimized his friend a couple of nights ago.

I'm really looking forward to getting home tonight so I can be nice to Ernie again. I sort of bitched him out after the second accident, and I don't want to get him all riled up in the morning before I leave, but tonight he's getting played with for quite a while.

Television
Gilmore Girls
Other than that, I was overjoyed to be watching Gilmore Girls last night. There were some great moments, and some funny lines, but generally it was a pretty unimportant episode; just getting the whole wedding plot line back on track. I had completely forgot that Luke had a daughter until almost all of the way through the conversation with the girl's Mom - I thought she was just some ex. Honestly, though, it wouldn't have mattered what they showed me. I was so overjoyed just to be watching Gilmore Girls again - I spontaneously laughed just from general content.

Scrubs
I could definately get used to two episodes of Scrubs every Tuesday. If you liked the first few seasons, but felt last season was a bit much with all the celeb cameos, come back. The show has gotten back to its roots so hard. In my opinion, thus far, this is the best season yet. Goofy shit galore - including a ninja fight that lasted at least a few minutes. And JD air-drumming to the opening music? Awesome.

Lost returns tonight, folks! Get your monster repellant ready!!

I think it's actualy "I Wish I HAD Jessie's Girl"

I feel like writing in short bursts today.

Deal with it.

Strange chat I just had at work: a guy asking for my advice concerning his deal with the DA which involved him becomming a NARC. Crazy.

I found out today that my "good student" credit on my car insurance continues until I'm 25! That is also crazy. But in a much better way.

Work is good, we launch a new site later this week that has a ton of potential, and another in a couple of weeks which could also be very good. Our new content writer also just started today (it turns out she broke her shoulder, not her arm), and she's pretty friendly, and fun to have around. She was a lawyer in California for a few years, and has lots of good stories from that.

It is really hot in my office right now. It seems to get this way every afternoon.

I'd like to have Ernie meet more dogs. He has gotten pretty comfortable in most aspects of day-to-day life, but still freaks out when he sees other dogs. It makes walks go from very plesent to a huge struggle really quickly. The only thing he's doing that still makes me think he's not quite comfortable yet is the way he walks around all night. He switches from his bed in the hallway to the bed in the bedroom over and over, and wanders around. We only made his bed in the hallway a few days ago, before that he always slept in the bedroom. So he clearly likes his hallway bed a lot. I'm not sure if he'd rather sleep out there, but wants to keep an eye on us, or if he'd rather sleep in the bedroom but wants to keep an eye on the rest of the apartment. Either way I wish he'd just make a choice. Hopefully he'll make a choice soon.

I got my haircut yesterday - it's sort of strange, but seems fine enough.

New Gilmore Girls tonight! WHooO!

There's been a severe lack of weird arts school kids on the streets since winter set in. I can't remember the last time I saw some strange performance art going on. Come on, people - suffer for your art!

Some time this week Maria is going to make me a chicken pot pie. When that day comes I will be very happy, and very full of chicken pot pie. It's made even more exciting by the fact that I'm basically out of food right now (excpet for pizza). Don't get me wrong, I love pizza, but having the best food possible to eat in between doesn't hurt.

I've been having a very strong urge to play Mario lately. Now I wish I had made sure I got my free Mario Sunshine when I got my Gamecube. I'm really looking forward to Mario on the Revolution - that could be really fun.

Two of my best friends now own Toyota Corollas. Carollas? Let me check the internet. COrolla. CArolla is the comedian that Jigsaw killed a while back.*

*What happened to that post? It seems that some posts are missing from Jigsaw's blog. What's going on? Is there a derranged blog serial killer out there that kills blogs buy slowly cutting pieces of them off??

My back is sore all the time now. I have to sit with a pillow under my back when I slouch to keep it from getting bad quickly. That sucks. Looks like my posture has finally caught up with me. Perhaps I should start sitting up straight. Bah.

I haven't read comics in a long time. This makes me once again ponder perhaps subscribing to the Sunday newspaper. Here are the Chicago Tribune's current rates:
Just Sunday: $1.25 / week
Wed, Thur, Fri, Sun: $1.50 / week
7 Days: $2.25 / week

This is amazingly cheap to me. And if I was going to subscribe to Sunday, why wouldn't I just go ahead and get 7 days a week? For a buck extra? The thing is that I can't imagine ever reading the paper, except maybe on Sundays. So I'd probably just get that. Five bucks a month? I think I could swing that. It might be a bigger hassle (just having to throw it away every day) than it's worth. I'll keep you posted.

Have you ever been to Restaurant.com? It's pretty cool. I've never used it, but I think I've been told about it before. Probably by Maria. I just rediscovered it today.

Having to go into the uw site to get my grades for my insurance reinstated my great joy felt from not being in school anymore. It feels so nice to not have grades to worry about.

Alright, that's it.

I Wish I was Jessie's Girl

Our new content writer was supposed to start today, but it sounds like she slipped at a gas station on her way in this morning and broke her arm! She's in the ER, and will probably show up later this week. The most interesting item on her resume (by far) was that she actually wrote a biography of Rick Springfield - the very same man who sang the song that this very same blog post is nammed after. Be sure to check out rickspringfield.com, but be careful - the site advises that some material may be unsuitable for people that don't know how to rock. I'm not kidding.

Even without her in the office, the two quality assurance guys moved in, and her desk is set up, so the room is much more full today. It's sort of nice, though, having more people around. It did feel odd sometimes with just John and I in this massive office. The QA guys are nice guys, but still pretty stuck in highschool. They grew up together in a suburb of Chicago, and one of them spent the morning on the phone with his Mom, whining about how his brother erased all of his music files from the computer. Then he called a third brother and told him to erase all of the other brother's music in retaliation. They're both in their mid-to-late twenties.

Tonight is the first working monday in months not to feature a wine night. It's pretty odd, but I welcome the opportunity to get my haircut and spend a little extra time hanging out around the apartment. I had the usual gang up on Friday for videogames, but instead we decided we were tired and everyone went home before 11. (Wah-wah) Otherwise the weekend was largely spent hanging around, watching football, seeing Match Point, petting Ernie, and playing a lot of Quake 4.

Quake 4 turns out to be exactly the game I want for my Xbox. I'd read so many so-so reviews of it, but it's the same fast-paced Quake we've always loved. The multiplayer is amazing, and (in my humble opinion) a million billion times more fun that Perfect Dark Zero. I'm so very glad I didn't let this game slip by. The single player is better than most give it credit for as well. Part way through you are captured by the enemy (a sort of race of robots that implant machine parts in their victims to make them solders), and you are put through the robot-icization process (a first-person ride down a conveyor belt in which your legs are chopped off, big needles slammed into your head, all kinds of horrible stuff), but rescued before the process is complete. Afterwards you can suddenly read all of the alien signs that were previous gibberish, you can hear their communications, you're faster, and can take more damage. It's pretty great.

Finally, have you read about the mouse that set a house on fire? The house's owner tried to kill the mouse by throwing it into a burning pile of leaves, and after it ignited, the mouse ran back inside the house, burning it down. This sounds suspiciously like a nightmare Metzger might have. And as such, I am now 63% sure that Metzger's nightmares are becomming reality. Watch out for reports of wide-spread frech bread pizza shortages and giant foozball guys stealing Replay TVs.

Air Force One

All week we've been seeing coast gaurd and military helicopters flying around outside of our window, and we finally found out why. It turns out that Bush is visiting the board of trade or something, and landed in Grant Park just now (which is immediately south of Millenium park). They've blocked off Lake Shore Drive while they get his motorcade going, and cars are backing up pretty far - already about a mile, I'd say. It seems to be taking a while to get him out of the helicopter and into his limo. Helicopters are cool.

Yesterday I had a magical little adventure during lunch. I took my watch (the one where the two fell off of the twelve) to get fixed at one of the countless jewelery shops on jeweler's row (Wabash Ave.). I went into a shop with dozens of little stalls occupied by jewelers, lots of old men leaning over work benches with tweezers and those magnifying glass things in their eyes. I asked an old Russian lady if they could fix my watch (they had been recommended as watch specialists). She took it to her husband (one of the old men working on diamonds), and they yelled at each other in Russian for a bit. Then she brings it back and just says, "Sixth floor, his name is Tom." So I thank her and head up. The Sixth floor is full of small offices of jewelers and whatnot, and sure enough, in the back is a tiny office with a handmade sign advertising Tom something or other, watch repairs. I rang his bell and he let me in. He too was leaning over a work bench, but he had many more tiny tools. He had the jewelers eye glass thing in, and it took him a couple of seconds to look up at me. "I heard you may be able to fix this watch for me," I say, he says nothing, but takes my watch. He puts his eye thing back in, examines it, and goes to town. He pulls out a tiny knife, pops the back out. Pulls out the motor and the face plate, and picks up the two using a tiny set of tweezers. He gently puts it aside and examines the face plate. He then turns around, grabs a thing of superglue, and puts a tiny dot of it on a sort of glass disk. He then takes what looks like a needle with a handle (clearly a watch fixer's tool of the trade), and dips that in the tiny dot of superglue. He applies a nearly microscopic dot of glue to a couple of points, slaps the 2 back on, and puts everything down. "It needs a few minutes to dry", he says in his heavy Greek accent, and goes back to his business. So I take a seat, and look around at all of his clocks. There were dozens, all ticking, all slightly creepy. Some were old, some new, many pretty junky, but all ticking. He also had his old television playing, of all things, Passions - the soap opera. It was a very surreal ten minutes. Afterwards, my watch is good as new, and he only charged me five bucks.

Ernie Report
He continues to feel more at home, I think. He laid on his back and let me pet his stomach for the first time yesterday, and I may be wrong, but I think he's lost a few pounds. Last night during our walk we were standing still and he bolted, snapping the leash, and he sort of whipped his head around just right and his collar came off. I was completely terrified for a moment, as there's no way Ernie will sit and stay for us yet, and I'm also not sure I could get him to follow me home. I lunged on him, and yelled sit, and he was amazingly calm, just sitting still as I held him down and got his collar back on. He seems to know when we really need him to obey us, which is good.

Television
The Office
Oh man, what a heart breaker. It actually seemed as if Jim was perhaps going to make a move towards Pam, but they were interrupted time and time again. I enjoyed the scene between Jim and Michael, where we got to see Michael being a real person, and inspire Jim to press on. Outside of those interactions, the rest of the episode was pretty normal stuff. Michael was goofy, Dwight was overly loyal, nothing too notable. Still good television, though.

My Name is Earl
I watched my first full episode of this last night; it was okay. The whole thing felt amazingly smoooth and enjoyable, though it never really paid off in any big way. I've always said that in the world of comedy, charm and likeability count for a lot, and this show seems to have a pretty charming cast. Perhaps once they hit their stride it'll become a companion to The Office for us. It seems to have the packaging and feel down, they just need to work on getting the characters to really play off of each other for better pay offs.

A Whole Heapin' Helpin'

Work is pretty much back on track, as I just finished with all the annoying catch-up work which built up over a week and a half. It's feeling quite nice to be back in the daily cycle. I'm also very much looking forward to tomorrow and this weekend. Friday will see a pair of meals with friends, and this weekend will be spent with Ernie and videogames. Bangin'.

I haven't had a picture up here for a while.

Tonight I'm taking Maria grocery shopping so she can pick up whatever crazy things she needs to make some amazing dish of some sort for Friday. I get excited when Maria cooks, because it usually turns out to be something I've never previously identified as food, but tastes amazing. I am also going to buy pizza and soda. Things I have frequently recognized as food.

There's not much else to report today - the Rose Bowl was fun, and we ate Amy's Mac and Cheese last night (delicious; Maria put some sour cream in there... MMMMM). So, without further ado, I present to you the Ernie Report.

Ernie Report
Ernie continues to be Ernie - all he wants to do is play, and seems immensely happy to see us no matter what. Last night we made great strides in the "chew on this toy, rather than my arm" concept, though that progress may be lost over the course of 23 hours. He was wearing on my nerves last night after our walk, as we ran into the cat again, and it totally set him off. Damn, he wants to eat that cat soo bad. I think that knowing there's a cat to be eaten has made him a bit more wound up in general, but hopefully over time they will develope some sort of comical relationship in which they mail each other birthday cakes with TNT candles. (On a side note, I've been suprised that our neighbors have resumed letting the cat out at night, what with it being January and all. I came down this morning to go to work and the cat was outside meowing super loud out in the snowy rain, poor guy.)

Work continues on what I'm calling Ernie's 'middle ground'. Right now he's either sleeping or it's a party. Once he's been with us for a while I hope to see a happy medium emerge. Linked with this is our continued efforts to sit together without my face being in immediate danger of being torn off. He's actually getting much better at sitting with me peacefully, the ultimate goal would be him laying down with just his head on my leg hanging out with me. I'm also hoping that at some point he'll pick up on the fact that me putting my coat on does not equate to a walk unless I also have the leash in my hand. It's a little hard to get out the door in the mornings sometimes.

He has seemed to be getting better in many areas; he walks around most of the time now without stopping in front of you every second, he is eating regularly, I think he slept through the night last night, he's getting the idea of toys (as I mentioned earlier), and I think he's connecting with Maria and I more every day. I'd like to see him connect with Maria so that he chooses hangs out with her sometimes. For the time being I'm guessing that he's just looking to wrestle and he'll go to whoever is willing, so he's usually comming up to me. Once Maria is back in school and around for the afternoons those two will probably bond pretty tightly, and I'll be missing the days he followed me around.

I am Wearing a new Sweater

Not Television
It's good to be back at work. I did this amazing thing this morning; I wanted to throw a pen away, but the garbage can is just on the other side of an empty desk across the room, so I thew the pen onto the desk and it slid off into the garbage can. Big ups to me! Yesterday was mostly spent catching up on all the little stuff I normally do day-to-day, but today I get to do some actual work. It'll be good to be back in the routine, and have weeks speeding by once more. After just four of those weeks, I'll be overjoyed by the arrival of one Mister Patrick Arthur Hayden, and we can go jogging by the lake (as if). It's gonna kick ass.

Maria and I were watching one of the Law & Order or CSI shows last night, and Walt from Lost was a guest star. Which made me think that perhaps the whole mystery in Lost is that the cast somehow got stuck in a TV show, and the "others" take them away to another channel. The characters could get sucked into portals or something, and end up appearing on other ABC shows. Eh? Eh??

Ernie Report
Ernie was very good yesterday. Maria came home to find him waiting by the door, and it appears he stayed home alone without incident. He also began eating yesterday - chowing down about half his bowl over the course of a few hours. The downside to him not eating for two days, then eating a lot in a short time was a couple of horrendous dog farts. The first of these paint-peelers actually chased us out of the den, and led me to take the E-Ring for a walk. He has yet to relieve himself outside, though, so I'm guessing today will be the first real test of his house training. Here's hoping!

Last night he also gave us plenty of space while we were eating, and spent a lot of the night just chilling out by himself. He seems to be getting used to the apartment. I sat on the floor with him for a while when I first came home, and succeeded in getting him to wrestle with me for a while. I think that's what all his pawing and nosing your hand is all about - his first timid attempts to play with us. He rolled over onto his back and grabbed my hand with his paws and (very gently) chewed on it. It was great - I'm glad he's feeling more at home!

Television
Scrubs
I really liked both episodes. They definately do seem to be more focused on scrubs weirdness, rather than trying to make the show more accessible. The multi-cultural siamese doctor, JD in the backpack, "I think that blonde girl just farted", all that stuff was great. I'm glad there's another weird, quirky comedy back on the air.

Resumption of Festivities
Lost returns next week (I think tonight is some sort of recap episode), Gilmore Girls returns next week, Scrubs is here now, West Wing returns next week, and 24 starts up in two weeks, I believe. Soon there will be too much to watch again! I'm really quite ready to be lost in TV once more.

Back to Work

It's good to be back on my usual schedule, but the last week and a half was fantastic. What a great break - just what I needed. Apparently, while I was gone, half of the office came down with a terrible flu and missed the week anyways. I'm glad I missed all of that - hopefully my already ailing immune system doesn't get sucker punched with another sickness.

Ernie Report
I am happy to say that Ernie is already showing signs of feeling more comfortable, though I'm sure we have a couple of weeks at least before he really settles down. I did get him to eat a few bits of food yesterday (from my hand - still won't eat from the bowl), and he slept in his bed in the bedroom last night. He was extremely nervous this morning when I left him alone, though. I hope he's okay all day by himself. Hopefully he'll be excited but generally okay when Maria gets home tonight.

I've been feeling tons of anxiety about Ernie thus far, and I think I have finally figured out why I'm so nervous. It's the fact that I don't know what to do with him just yet. All of our other dogs have been little guys that can sit in your lap as you watch tv, and want nothing more than to be by you all day. That's easy with a fifteen pound dog, but not with Ernie! I think I need to get used to having him hang out on the floor when we watch TV, and make playing with him a more dedicated time (rather than just petting him as we hang out normally). I've reminded myself that some of our early dogs, and tons of other dogs, stay outside, and only see their owners to eat or play, and they're perfectly fine! I've been freaking myself out worrying if Ernie is getting the care and attention he needs - he is, just in a different way. This is also why I'll be very happy when the day comes that he's ready to play with toys, as that is something we can do together.

All in all, it's going to take time for him to feel at home, but today is his first step towards getting used to our routine.

Television
The Arrested Development episode last night was fantastic, though I'm not sure exactly what it meant. Is Fox considering keeping the show? Am I actually supposed to do something at www.SaveOurBluths.com? It seemed like it had more meaning than just a play on the real situation around the show, but that may just be wishful thinking. Either way, great episode, and I really, really hope there are many more to come.

The Cotton Bowl
A fun game to watch, Madison pretty much dominated the entire time. Auburn didn't seem to show up - we snapped their 38 game winning streak, during which time they had won three bowl games in a row. Alverez's departure was fitting, and more emotional than I expected. This was a great season, despite the typical end-of-year choking. Now it's time for the NFL playoffs. I need to pick a team to root for, as the Packers are clearly out of it (kudos for firing Sherman, by the by; he's a nice guy, but it needed to happen). I'm thinking the Seahawks, as they do have Holmgren, and I enjoy watching them play. Plus, the Packers beat them, so I can always claim if the Seahawks win it all, that the Packers were better than them.

Scrubs
Premiers tonight! Two episodes!

Ernie Comes Home!

Yesterday was the big day - we brought Ernie home, and he is currently oinking around the den as I type this. He's being very good thus far in terms of not peeing in the house, but is so keyed up the he is having a very hard time settling down. It's understandable that he's feeling unsure and nervous, but I certianly hope he chills out soon. He seems to be just fine when he's laying on his own, or cruising around the house, but as soon as you pet him or let him on the couch he can't sit still. He doesn't want anything, just squirms and trys to get as close to your face as possible, it seems. I'm sure aftera few days here he will calm down and feel at home.

My most exciting Ernie moment thus far was when he went and got his hippo toy on his own and chewed on it for a while. It was the most comfortable I've seen him, and seemed to indicate that he's already settling in here.

He LOVES going outside, and constantly goes to the door to ask for it. He woke us up at 7:30 and Maria took him out. I took him out again at 8, and at 8:30 he was right back at the door. I'm sure we'll take him out a few more times today; perhaps he just needs to scout out the new neighborhood.

He is still very quiet (yet to make a noise louder than his snoring), even when other dogs bark at him he remains silent. I've been told by the shelter employees that he does bark once he feels at home, though.

Here are the best pictures of him thus far - the camera seems to freak him out a little, so this will be it for a while at least.
