I Watched an Awful Lot More TV last NIght

Grey's Anatomy
Meridith has a sister, and she's way hotter. The basics: the new season picks up with a new crop of interns, and George is one of them (because he failed his final doctor's exam). Some characters left (gay-bashing doctor is gone), and some new ones came in. All in all the show really hasn't changed much; the gang are real doctors now, but that doesn't really seem to matter very much. Oh, and the blonde doctor saved a deer.

It wasn't a bad episode, but I fear the luster of this one may be fading. I used to love the Seattle setting and the passable romance story lines, but now things are feeling a little bit old. This season will either be the death rattle or the revival of Grey's Anatomy.

The Office
Big ups to whoever is in charge over there for putting Pat and Jim together while we weren't looking. And I loved the little twist of them trying to hide their relationship. I don't think America could have stood any more breathless flirting.

There were some quality funny bits, but I won't bore you with them here. The show seems to be spreading out its focus more and more, showing us lots of Kevin and the other second-tier office mates. I think that's going to work out really well, as they've managed to build a pretty decent ensamble cast. I doubt any of the characters could carry much on their own, but grouped together they do very well.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Holy magoly, this show is really getting back into stride. I loved when Charlie said "Gang, let's solve this North Korea problem once and for all!" In the episode titled "The Gang Solves the North Korea Problem Once and for All". Charlie is really running away with the show in my opinion, though Frank and Mac have developed some great bits too.

Oh, and I want a steam whistle now. I can mount it on my safe.

House
I think I actually watched House earlier in the week, but forgot to mention it. The season premier was decent - House has to hire a new staff, since the other three took off. Lots of the traditional "House solves medical problems by almost killing several people" schtick. I really think the longevity of this show is completely dependant on getting a decent support team in there this year. House is fine, and I like the other two main doctors on the show, but the three kids in his team last year were pretty bland. Give me some spice there and you may just have something (and don't stick to that forumla quite so much).

Next Up
I have more tv shows on my DVR than a T-Rex has in his entire gigantic mouth right now.

  • Chuck
  • Kid Nation
  • Bionic Woman
  • Bit Shots
  • My Name is Earl
  • Dirty Sexy Money
Hopefully I'll catch up this weekend and start making cuts, as there are a lot of series premiers on there. There are also even more shows starting next week.

Fall TV is Here and I am not Dead

Here's a real quick fall TV rundown for those of you leaving comments demanding such. Consider the spolier alert to be on for this whole thing, though I won't give away anything huge (if I can avoid it).

Gossip Girl
I can't recall how I ended up with nothing better to do than watch the premier of Gossip Girl, but I did so on the grounds that it was:

  • On the CW
  • Somehow associated with the OC
  • Could be abbreviated G. Girl(s)

Suffice to say it did not hold up the hefty weight of the two shows upon which its expectations were based. I did enjoy how the show went balls-out with making these kids richer than a bag full of diamond sauce. They lived in castles, bought gold Ferraris and drank in public (the greatest perk of all for a 16 year-old rich kid). Alas the story and the characters and stuff were really boring. I doubt the worlds will ever align again in such a way that I end up watching this, but if I do you'll all know about it.

Journeyman
This wasn't terrible, I didn't think, but it was sort of played out. This show is as close to Quantum Leap as you can get without a calculator made out of candy cubes. The guy travels through time, helps people, and even sort of has a guide who shows him the ropes (though that was just barely brushed upon). The difference comes from the fact that he always seems to end up close to his own life, and can do stuff like smooch his dead wife (cha-ching!). He also dissapears in the real world when he jumps, leaving all of his friends to assume he's on crack after his second trip (like how if I go to the store and don't tell someone there's an intervention waiting when I get back; you're all terrible friends).

In the end this could end up alright if they put together some good stories, but I found the premier to be pretty dull. The guy he was helping didn't do much to keep me interested, so the majority of the episode was bad, but the ending was kind of neat. So who knows.

Life
I thought this would be about a crazy renegade cop who has millions of dollars and busts chops all over town while driving a Bentley. But instead the guy does those things while being super neurotic and having no impulse control (apparently because he spent the last 12 years in jail getting his ass kicked and studying zen meditation). He also droped hillarious joke after hillarious joke about how crazy technology was. "You have a phone in your POCKET?" "What's an IM?" "You can't take my picture with that, I just learned that's a tiny phone!" See, becuase he was in jail for 12 years.

This is the first decisive casuality of this season. I'd bet there's actually a better chance of me watching Gossip Girls again before I watch this (especially since it's on a full night). So goodbye, Life, I hope you happen upon the juicy "Laser Jet printers can't print color - whaaaaaaaat?????" joke soon.

How I Met Your Mother
Great, as always. This is one of those shows that has managed to trick me into thinking I am friends with the characters. I want to hang out with Doogie (aka Joe) every time I see this. It really is a wonderful television program.

Heroes
HEEEERRRROOOOOOEEEEEESSSS!!!!! That's my jam! It was good, you knew it would be. There are like fifteen story lines going on, and a boat load of mysteries. The entire premier was pretty much:

See a character - woah, how is he/she still alive? - People chasing people! - I have no idea what they're talking about - scene cut - see a character - woah, who's that guy? - People chasing people!

They really setup a lot of things to play with for the rest of the season, which should be a good thing. They just need to bring things together a lot better this time around (did I read that Polley liked the season 1 finale? I can't figure that kid out).

My favorite part here is that Hiro is becoming Hiro's Hero. It makes me want to dance around.

More to Come...
Some serious hitters are coming up tonight, and some big names are still waiting on the DVR. In the near future I'll check out:

  • The Office
  • Grey's Anatomy
  • Dirty Sexy Money
  • Chuck

And many many more. Standards are going to be higher than usual this year, as there are so many shows on my DVR right now. Will your favorites make the cut?? SUSPENSE!

For Chris

I was going to wait until Chris posted something, but I'll forget. I just stumbled across this online and thought it fitting.

"Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse."

(For those who don't know Chris, he's an English teacher who doesn't use capital letters.)

Fall TV

I'm enjoying a nice afternoon of Badger football (and watching Appalachian State... ahem), and while I'm sitting here I decided to hammer out my fall tv schedule. If anybody would like to have it, I uploaded it here. It also contains a list of all the premier dates I could find.

Some updates from the last time I wrote about this: first, there is no such thing as Heroes: Origins. I thought the new season was called that, or that there was even a second show, but it's still just Heroes. Second, I can find no information about The IT Crowd, so I'm not sure what the deal is there.

Also, if you're looking for some more suggestions, check out Chris's Schedule and Qualler's Schedule. It should be a good fall. Two great things: almost everything premiers inside of one week (September 23-27) and there are almost NO times where there are three things worth checking out. Way to optimize for my DVR, television networks! The only potential problem comes with shows I'm already watching, but other than Weeds and GREEK I doubt anything stands a chance to beat out any fall shows.

(Speaking of GREEK, are you still watching it? Going down hill, isn't it? Not like the glory days.)
